Nehama Leibowitz (1905- 1997) was one of the most brilliant teachers of Torah the 20th century had to offer. Ordinary and extraordinary folk sat to learn at her feet -- immigrants, soldiers, kibbutzniks, rabbis. She received a professorship at Tel-Aviv University in 1968 and was awarded several prizes in the course of her life, including the prestigious Israel Prize in the Field of Education in 1956. In 1942, her students wanted to continue learning with their teacher over the summer, and Nehama began to produce worksheets which contained commentaries and difficult questions which she mailed to them. Eventually thousands of people were the recipients of her sheets of Torah which became a year round endeavour. Nehama Leibowitz developed a new conception of Torah study, focused on the classic commentaries of the bible, biblical criticism, archaeology and history. She revolutionized and raised the prestige of Torah study in a world where Yeshivot were largely Talmud focused. Her question, which we will revisit many times: "What's Rashi's difficulty?" is a common Torah study question today.
