What is Pesach?
Pesach (Passover) is the most loved and celebrated Jewish holiday by families around the world. It is one of the three pilgrimage festivals where in ancient Israel Jews journeyed to Jerusalem with sacrifices for the Temple. Pesach is both an agricultural festival and a historical festival. It is a celebration of spring through the rebirth, the first grain harvest and the birth of the first lambs of the season. Historically it celebrates the Israelilte exodus from Egypt, from slavery to freedom.
Today Pesach is centered around family celebration and/or communal celebration of the Seder (literally order- ritual meal), which retells the Pesach story through prayer and study around a ritual meal. The Haggadah (literally telling- prayer book for the Seder) is used to guide and frame the Seder. The Seder is also a time for sharing stories and family celebration.
As Pesach approaches it is customary to do a thorough spring cleaning, change to special dishes for Pesach, and eat special foods to commemorate the Israelites quick exit from Egypt. We eat Matza and food without leavening as well other special foods to mark the season, and separate if from the rest of the year. Some Jews will only eat food that is kosher for Pesach throughout this festival.
The Shulamith Reich Elster Resource Center at the Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning has a variety of links, references and activities for you, your loved ones and community to participate in and to review as this special holiday approaches.
